Their prices start at a fairly expensive $9.99 for their monthly plan and then begin to get cheaper as you commit more to their services. The quarterly plan comes in at $19.99 with the bi-annual plan being $29.99. The yearly plan saves you the most money and is priced at $59.99.

Once you have clicked ‘download’, simply follow the installation instructions, creating a file and a desktop shortcut. It also should be noted that TorGuard doesn’t require you to restart your computer, which is always a handy bonus.
Once the installation is complete, you’ll be greeted with the TorGuard client and asked to choose your security, locations and privacy settings, after which you can click connect, sign in and then you’re good to go.
The client is very basic and doesn’t look too advanced or ‘shiny’ as some of the other providers’ clients, but it does the job and offers a good amount of options.
The first screen you’ll be greeted with (as seen on the right) will allow you to choose your preferred server location, your protocol (which is between UDP and TCP), and will let you change the security encryption and authentication.
There is also the option to auto-connect once TorGuard is launched. Hit connect and you’ll begin to be connected to the server you chose, and the screen (as seen on the left) is very handy as it also will tell you your connection speed and upkeep, as well as the level of encryption you have.
As for the settings, there are plenty of options to choose from. Navigate back to the start screen and click ‘more settings’, which will open a tab of options for customization.
The general settings allow you to change simple things, such as auto-start, launch, and login, and you can also change the appearance of the client if you so choose. There is the option for an app kill switch, which allows you to choose what applications to terminate if the VPN connection shuts down.
You also have custom control over your scripts (which unlocks a lot of potentials) and have an array of options in the network tab. Here you can toggle IPv6 leak prevention and mess with your DNS settings. Also, there is an option to prevent DNS leaks.
TorGuard also has apps for mobile devices, but they are still incredibly basic (the IOS app is) and only give the option to select your VPN server location. There are also security protocol options but they only allow you to choose from either IPSec or IKEv2. The encryption for mobile was AES-128 and was using SHA256 for authentication.
Servers and Speeds
As already mentioned, TorGuard has a massive server base of 3,000+ in over 50+ different countries around the world, giving it excellent coverage and the ability to be connected to from just about anywhere.
The connection to all servers was decent and the speed of the connections was good. However, for the European servers, the connection would drop to a horrific 2MBPs during peak times, which was unacceptable.
Moreover, DNS leaks were detected that were compromising our geographical location which is disappointing. However, TorGuard does not guarantee DNS leak prevention and this may be the reason why. Overall, the network was average/below-average, and not one of TorGuard’s strong points.
Compatibility
TorGuard is compatible with multiple devices and can sustain up to 5 connections simultaneously with just one account. We live in a digital world and are progressively moving over to mobile devices, and therefore need to be protected on the go.
In accordance, VPN services need to be able to provide us with protection and privacy on multiple devices so it should be expected that TorGuard offers multi-compatibility. TorGuard can be downloaded for your laptop, mobile (Android or IOS), Mac and router. TorGuard also offers a range of their routers that are already configured with tomato firmware and TorGuard VPN.

Customer Support
As with most VPN services, TorGuard offers 24/7/365 support to all its users and customers. TorGuard offers live chat, FAQ, a ticket system and you can even call them up. It is nice to see a live chat option on a VPN service as many providers seem to get rid of them.
The knowledge base on the website, however, was quite disappointing and I think they should put a lot more effort into designing a better support page which saves people asking and waiting for a response. However, they do offer a large number of video tutorials and setup tutorials which were very helpful.
I also liked the fact they have a forum that allows you to ask other users for help and advice. In regards to the response speed, it was fast and professional. Overall, despite the knowledge base, I thought the support was quite good.
Privacy and Security
One of the VPN’s main selling points is the security and privacy that it gives its users. TorGuard’s security is decent and they offer a range of encryptions/ciphers.
For encryption, you can choose between AES-128 or AES-256-bit encryptions, with AES-256 being the most up-to-date data encryption available, and they also give you some options for data authentication, with a choice of SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512. For handshaking purposes, the software uses RSA-2048.
TorGuard also offers many protocols including OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP, IPsec, SSTP and iKEV2. OpenVPN is currently the best and most secure protocol so it would be a no-brainer to choose this over the other options.
Besides, TorGuard offers a stealth VPN option, which channels the connection through an encrypted proxy tunnel adding a second layer of protection. TorGuard also has a strict no-logs policy but unfortunately doesn’t support DNS leak prevention, so your location may be compromised.
Free Trial and Refund Policy
After searching the site for a while I was unable to find a free trial which is quite disappointing as a free trial is always a unique selling point. They do, however, offer a 7-day money-back guarantee that allows customers to claim their money back if they are not satisfied with the VPN service.

TorGuard is an average VPN service. They do offer a massive range in terms of server locations and countries, and their speeds are relatively good but can slow down horribly during peak times. Their security is decent as they secure networks with either 128 or 256-bit military encryptions and have various protocols to choose from.
They also have options to use a ‘stealth VPN’ and also give you the option to write your scripts for their clients. However, their service is a bit pricey for the features they offer, and DNS leaks were found in the tunnels. Despite TorGuard offering a host of other services such as email, proxy and business packages, there are better VPN providers on the market.
