Adobe Premiere Pro

Let's first see how to convert a vertical video to horizontal one using Adobe Premiere Pro. It’s a well-known software that has a steep learning curve but is capable of solving various video editing tasks. Run the program and Import your vertical clip. Right-click on the clip and choose New Sequence From Clip to create a new timeline with a clip inside it. You can rename your sequence if needed or leave it as it is.

Now right-click again and choose Sequence Settings. A new window will pop up. Find the Video section and change the frame size to horizontal (for example, 1920 by 1080). Apply the changes. The video now is horizontal, but there are black bars that were added automatically on the sides of the clip. You can leave them empty, or add some color or graphics.

You can also change the position of the clip and its scale. For that, you will need to choose Window on the upper toolbar and select Effect Controls. To export your horizontal clip hit File and choose Export, then select Media.

Clipify

Now let’s turn a vertical video to a horizontal using Clipify video editor. This program will suit both experienced users and beginners. Once you’ve run it, select New Project and choose Blank Project. Hit Add Videos and Photos and import your vertical clip.

If your video is displayed sideways, then go to the toolbar and hit the Rotate button. Now click on the Crop button on the toolbar. Select the aspect ratio from the drop-down menu (for example, 16*9). Now you can adjust the frame to resize the clip to your liking. Hit Save to keep the changes. If the project settings differed from the crop size that you chose, there may appear black bars on the sides.

This problem is solved easily – just click on the Fit into Frame button and the software will adjust your video according to the project setting. If you wish to save your horizontal video right away – go to the Create Video. There you can select the format and size depending on your goal.

And the last program that we’ll use to make a vertical video horizontal is VLC Media Player. Once you’ve opened the player, hit Media, then Open File, and choose the video that you want to work with.

Now navigate to the Tools and select Effects and Filters. Switch to the Video Effects tab and select Crop. Now you need to type in the number of pixels that the program will cut. Since we want to turn our vertical video to horizontal, we’ll be cropping it only from the bottom and top. You can adjust the values by using the arrows. Remember the values or write them down somewhere, because that’s not all you have to do. Close the window and go again to Tools, but choose Preferences from the dropdown menu.

In the Show Settings section hit the All checkbox. This way all the tools will be shown to you. Now you need to find Croppad. It’s in the Video Section under the Filters. If you have trouble finding it, simply type in Croppad in the search field. Now you need to enter the numbers of pixels that were cut down from the top and the bottom in the Crop section. Now go back to the Filters and choose the Video Scaling filter. Hit Save and export your vertical video to the folder.
